Introduction

Music, particularly the blues was a big part of the era during the timeline of TKAM.  The Jim Crow era included encounters with poverty, racism, disrespect, and protest.  These themes were developed by Harper Lee in 'To Kill a Mockingbird'. The PBS website, Identity, Oppression and Protest:  To Kill a Mockingbird and the Blues help students understand these ideas, by incorporating the blues and other literature of the time.  A PDF of the lesson can be obtained by clicking on the following link  identity_oppress_protest_music lesson TKAM.pdf

There are many songs that describe or protest discrimination against African Americans.  The following is a list of musicians and the songs that reflect some of the themes in TKAM.  Ask your students to listen to each of these songs or read the lyrics and identify the theme that the artist was trying to identify in his/her lyrics and/or use one of the activities from the Musical/Rhythmic section of the UDL Novel Study Activities that are located in the Activities section.
