Activities

Page history last edited by maureen lafleche 9 years, 9 months ago

In my search to represent the content of this wiki visually, I wondered how I would ever be able to find or create something  that represented the Activities tab.  Then I discovered Pivot Stickfigure Animator.  The Pivot/Action/Activities character was created using Pivot Stickfigure Animator.  You can create your own Pivot Stickfigure by clicking on the link.

Introduction

In the past, I have struggled finding projects that would met the learning needs of ALL students.  In my quest for this, I scowered the internet and gathered a variety of activites for a novel study.  They were intially generic in nature and then I added some assistive technology so that all students could take part.

According to Dave Edyburn, one method that he has 'found to be very helpful for enabling teachers to begin using principles of Universal Design for Learning principles in their own classroom involves Tic-Tac-Toe. Essentially, teachers create a menu of learning activities that involves selecting learning activities for diverse learners and ordering the various activities on a Tic-Tac-Toe grid. Then, students are responsible for selecting three (in a row) activities to complete their assignment. A valuable resource for teachers interested in getting started with instructional planning for diversity.'

Initially I started this project by collecting a variety of tic-tac-toe graphic organizers.  They covered a wide array of topics...from bullying...to math...to english.  After a conversation with an English teacher at a high school that I worked with I narrowed my focus to English....and then narrowed it further to the novel, 'To Kill A Mockingbird' (TKAM).

On the Tic-Tac-Toe graphic organizer below there are nine novel study activities.  They can be used for any novel that you are studying. In the preceding word document that is in this section I have created numerous other activities.  You can choose to use the ones already in the Tic-Tac-Toe grid or you can switch the activities to include ones from the Word document below or create your own.

Check out this Web based project that was created by Hogue from Sheboygan Falls School District.  The link to the School district is no longer active but the Web based project is very well done.  The project consists of two main parts:  an annotated list of some websites that pertain to the novel TKAM and 'mulitgenre hypertext essay' that the students need to create.

ReadWriteThink has put together a wonderful lesson, 'Spend a Day in My Shoes: Exploring the Role of Perspective in Narrative'.  It uses the quote by Scout, "You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view...until you climb into his skin and walk around in it" (36) as the basis for a writing assignment.

Clicker 5 Activity

Below is a Historic Civil Rights Timeline Activity that I created using Clicker 5.  Please note that in order to view a Clicker 5 activity that you must have Clicker 5/6 installed.
